Meet Dr. Marina Badillo- Diaz, the Visionary Behind AI Social Worker

A note from the founder

I didn’t start The AI Social Worker because I loved tech.
I started it because I loved the work and I wanted to support my fellow community of social workers.

I’m a licensed clinical social worker and social work professor who came into this field the way so many of us do: through lived experience. A family member’s autism diagnosis showed me early on just how broken the systems were. I promised myself I’d become someone who made a difference. And I did until burnout, outdated systems, and administrative overload started getting in the way.

I wasn’t just tired. I was grieving the version of social work I believed in.

The turning point? Realizing AI wasn’t the enemy—it was a tool. When guided by ethical standards, it could actually bring us closer to the work we care about.

I created The AI Social Worker to make those advances in social work accessible to real social workers, not just tech experts. This is about reclaiming your time, protecting your energy, and staying connected to the mission that brought you here.

Because this isn’t just about the future of social work, it’s about protecting its core value of connection at the center.

    • Masters in Social Work from Columbia University in 2011

    • Doctorate in Social Work from New York University in 2021

    • New York State Clinical Social Work License since 2015

    • Register Social Work License in Ontario, Canada 2023

    • Post-Graduate Clinical Supervision Certificate from Smith College in 2016

    • Adjunct professor teaching social work courses across prestigious universities including Columbia, NYU, and Hunter College

    • Completed a Schools Ambassador Fellowship with the US Department of Education in 2022-23 focusing on youth mental health and 21st century learning

    • Former board member of the National School Social Work Association of America in 2022-24

    • Published author in the peer reviewed journal “Children and Schools”

    • Conducted over 25 trainings on AI and Social Work Practice across the US and Canada for over 3,000 social workers including with the NASW, CASW, SSWAA, NASW NY State Chapter, NASW NC State Chapter, SSWAG, and SSWAM and growing

  • Her areas of interest and expertise include:

    • Ethics and artificial intellegence for social work practice

    • School social work practice, education, youth mental health

    • Clinical supervision and professional development for social workers
